What Is a Register Plate and Why Is It Important?
A register plate is a fixed, non-combustible metal plate fitted across the fireplace opening above a stove, with the flue pipe passing through it.
Its job is to close off the unused opening into the chimney and form a secure barrier above the appliance.
A correctly fitted register plate can help reduce heat loss from the room, limit cold downdraughts and prevent dust and debris from the chimney falling into the fireplace. It also helps create a neater, more controlled installation around the flue pipe.
Register plates should be made from a suitable heat-resistant, non-combustible metal, such as mild or stainless steel. The material needs to be strong, durable and capable of withstanding the temperatures it may be exposed to over many years of use. The plate should fit properly around the flue pipe and be securely fixed in position.
Materials such as wood, plywood, plasterboard and other products not designed for the temperatures involved should not be used as substitutes.
Like the rest of a stove and chimney installation, the register plate should be checked during routine servicing to make sure it remains secure and in good condition. It may look like a simple part of the installation, but a properly fitted register plate plays an important role in keeping the fireplace tidy, comfortable and safe.
