Creosote in your log burner?

Creosote is a sticky mix of tar, soot, and condensation that forms inside chimney liners when wood burns.
It is caused by burning the log burner at cool temperatures or burning unseasoned wood.
It is highly flammable and one of the main causes of chimney fires.

The 3 Stages of Creosote Build-Up

  1. Stage 1 – Light Dusty Coating
    • Thin layer of soot
    • Easy to remove
    • Low fire risk
    • Usually removed during a standard chimney sweep
  2. Stage 2 – Thickened Flakes
    • Harder, flaky deposits
    • Increased chimney fire risk
    • May require specialist treatment
  3. Stage 3 – Thick Black Tar
    • Heavy tar-like glaze
    • Extremely dangerous and highly flammable
    • Can damage the chimney liner
    • Often requires liner replacement
