Smoke not exiting through the chimney properly?

smoke coming out of log burner into room

Smoke spillage is when smoke comes back into the room instead of going up the chimney.

This can affect air quality and indicates the stove or flue or chimney is not working correctly.

It may set off your carbon monoxide alarm.

The smoke spillage test is a test that HETAS sweeps have to do as part of a HETAS certified sweep.
Book a HETAS sweep by adding it to your booking.

Main Causes of Smoke Spillage
Blocked chimney -  from birds’ nests, soot, or creosote buildup
Cold chimney / downdraft caused by weather conditions
Downdraft caused by poor chimney cowl setup or damaged cowl
Closed or faulty damper / air control
Fire not hot enough due to wet or poor-quality fuel
Limited room ventilation - stoves over 5kW will struggle for air in a small room
Poor chimney stack positioning - too short or multiple pots
Chimney capped, lowered or decommissioned

Recommended Fixes
Do not open the door fully when adding fuel - check the manual
Fit a bird guard or suitable cowl
Warm the flue before lighting the fire by burning paper or using a hairdryer
Ensure the damper is fully open and working
Use dry kindling and wood with under 20% moisture
Improve airflow by opening a window or adding ventilation
Extend the chimney if needed
Reinstate previously sealed chimneys professionally

Regular chimney maintenance and correct stove setup help keep the stove safe, efficient, and smoke-free.
